THE WAHGI SING SING
September 26, 2006
In June, 2006, we had the privilege of attending the Waghi Show which was only in its third year of production. This was one of the highlights of our experience in PNG, arranged by Trans Niugini Tours. The show attracted numerous wonderful local dance groups, all in their feathered finest traditional dress. Groups represented communities of the Waghi Valley and surrounding areas, including Mt. Hagen, with some from even greater distances. Since the show is new, there were few other tourists present and very little commercialism. Each dance group clearly enjoyed competing with each other and performing for their friend, while allowing us easy opportunities to interact with and photograph them.
We stayed at the Wahgi Valley Guest House, a newly constructed, rustic mountaintop lodge with gorgeous views where one may watch morning clouds dancing through the valleys. The guest house provides very basic accommodations and is reached by walking up a steep trail to the ridge top. The staff were incredibly helpful and gracious, providing good food and excellent demonstrations of local cultural activities. In addition, they also accompanied us as guides to the Waghi Show, wich immensely aided our understanding of the activities.
During our three days in the Waghi Valley, we felt as though we were honored guests being introduced to a very special culture, quite unique from our own. Throughout our visit, we felt very warmly welcomed by the local residents of the valley as well as by our guides and the Guest House staff.
